Commander Keen Episode I: Marooned on Mars
Commander Keen is side scrolling platforming game, which was released in December 1990. First game in the series is divided by three different episodes (Every episode was sold separately.)
Story starts at 8-year old Billy Blaze's house, who is a child genius. He builds a spaceship on his backyard and while he's parents are out of the house, he travels to mars with his spaceship. While Billy's off his ship, the vorticon's steals four vital components of the ship. Billy must get them back to get back home.
Platforming is pretty basic. You can jump and shoot with your gun (Gun ammo is limited and you can collect more ammo in levels.) Later in the game you can even get pogo stick to jump even higher platforms. Controls seems to be pretty solid and getting used to them doesn't take too long.
There's not much of enemies in the game and they do not tend to be that difficult, but some of them can cause you hard time because they can act quite randomly.
There was actually one thing that almost made me lose my mind and that was the sound effects. They are actually quite horrible in this game, so if you appreciate sense of hearing. I recommend to turn them off.
But for the first game in the series. It is pretty solid, basic platformer overall. I'm eager to see other games in the series. Definitely worth to try.
